Whilst being your own boss can bring freedom & reward, it can also be a lonely, risky + very scary place to be.
When all is well the rewards are clear – recurring revenue, sense of purpose, contribution & achievement + soaring confidence & self belief.
However, if things take a turn, there’s no place to hide – it’s all on you, and that can be difficult to disconnect from personally & emotionally in order to make rational & objective calls.
Over the last few weeks I’ve had numerous chats with solo coaches about navigating our landscape & the challenges they’ve faced + indeed face going forward.
Income is a high priority of each – no surprise, it’s a big part of why we do what we do; it’s security – but is it the be-all-end-all that the business gurus make it out to be?
It should be no surprise that the folk we see & hear most often on social media are those who are best at it – those who are best at using SM as a platform to market themselves.
With this in mind, it should also be no surprise that these folk value engagement, leads & ultimately income over anything else [including quality of product]. Meaning engagement, leads & income are what shape their offerings & definitions of success.
As humans, when we feel deficient in a particular need, it dominates our world. Our ideals shift to one of abundance in the area we are currently deficient, and that ideal becomes our utopia.
This is where money folk manipulate the solo coach – they hold the secret map to perceived perfection – to a world of cash abundance…
Coach gets drawn in –> generates income –> realises authenticity, quality and sustainability are the price to pay –> becomes disillusioned –> leaves industry [in debt].
Business mentors appear to be a safe bet – that’s how they sell it.
This isn’t always the case.
Fast money comes from big bets. Big bets come with high risk.
Slow money comes from investment in yourself; to learn more and compound over time…to eventually make more, if you so wish.
Anybody that made a lot of money that stuck, didn’t do so overnight, and they likely did it whilst contributing value and connection back into the game along the way.
